Highway Review:
Shawnee (pop. 28,692), home of Oklahoma Baptist University, is the next major town, twelve miles down the interstate. Exit 181 (U.S. 177/270/OK 3) and Exit 186 (OK 18) serve Shawnee.

Interstate 40 continues heading towards Arkansas through eastern Oklahoma. U.S. 62 merges on at Exit 222 in Okemah and U.S. 75 joins I-40 and U.S. 62 at Exit 231 west of Henryetta, home of former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman. Exit 240A (Indian Nation Turnpike) and Exit 240B (U.S. 62 East/U.S. 75 South) provide connections to Tulsa via U.S. 75 and Dallas via the Indian Nation Turnpike.

Continuing its way towards Arkansas, Interstate 40 skirts the Lake Eufaula area. Exits for the lake include Exit 259 (OK 150), Exit 264A (U.S. 69 South), and Exit 265 (Business U.S. 69). The U.S. 69 interchange is a cloverleaf as the federal highway is an expressway with interchanges throughout this part of Oklahoma. Exit 278 serves U.S. 266, OK 2, and Warner. Exit 286 (Muskogee Turnpike) provides a connection to Muskogee and Tulsa. At about mile marker 290 is the Arkansas River bridge which was the site of a tragedy May 26, 2002 when a towboat barge hit a bridge support, causing 500 feet of the bridge to collapse. Fourteen people were killed after their cars plunged into the river that morning.

The interstate heads through some eastern Oklahoma scenery as it skirts the Robert S. Kerr Lake for about 20 miles. Sallisaw (pop. 7,989) is the final major town along the highway at Exit 307. The U.S. 64 exit near Roland (Exit 325) provides the final fast-food restaurants in a recently-developed area. Before long, you are crossing the state line into Arkansas and are now heading towards Van Buren, Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville, and beyond.
