OK 97T
DECOMMISSIONED

Highway Review:
The latest state highway to be decommissioned in Oklahoma is also the last new highway to be built in the state. OK 97T opened to traffic January 17, 2003, and was decommissioned in January 2004. OK 97T was about three miles long and provides a truck bypass of Sand Springs for those who want to drive on OK 97 north of Sand Springs. (Which, believe me, is not much, just Zink Ranch and some residences) OK 97T never got to appear on an Oklahoma state map, and was never signed from U.S. 64/U.S. 412. Its one-year life as a highway makes me wonder why they even bothered to build it!

Highway Information:
Distance (approximate): 3.0 miles
Counties traveled through: Tulsa, Osage
Highway intersections: U.S. 64/412 (Mile 0.0), OK 97 (Mile 3.0)
Highway duplexes: None

SOUTHERN TERMINUS
U.S. 64/412, west of Sand Springs

OK 97T South at the U.S. 64/U.S. 412 East frontage road.
There was no "END" sign at this terminus. (Photo taken

OK 97T South at U.S. 64/U.S. 412 West. At least, it should
be that way. OK 51 is signed here, even though it does not
join U.S. 64 and U.S. 412 for another mile to the east.

U.S. 64/U.S. 412 West at 129th West Ave. exit. No mention
of OK 97T was ever made from either direction of the
Keystone Expressway during OK 97T's short life. Then
again, many signs on the Keystone are older than I am.
(Photo taken 4/25/03)
However, once you get off the highway, there was a sign for
OK 97T North! This is from the north (westbound) frontage
road of the Keystone Expressway. (Photo taken 4/25/03)
OK 97T North assurance shield. The highway has two
northbound lanes for its first mile as it climbs a steep hill.
The view of the area from the top, however, is fantastic.

NORTHERN TERMINUS
OK 97, north of Sand Springs

OK 97T North at OK 97. Like the southern terminus, no
"END" sign is present. (Photo taken 4/25/03)
OK 97 South approaching OK 97T. The sign, however,
says "JCT OK 97." Yes, OK 97 South does turn left at
OK 97T, but still, the sign should say "JCT OK 97T."

This photo is from about the same spot of the error
"JCT OK 97" sign. It was taken 10 days before OK
97T opened to traffic. At the time of the photo, OK 97
curved to the left. By the time I was back in the area in
April, this section of road I was on was no more. (Photo

This picture, also from January 2003, shows what is
now OK 97 North at OK 97T. (Photo taken 1/7/03)
