Now we have entered
Norman, (pop. 95,694) the 3rd-largest city in Oklahoma. Norman is
a sprawling city and the home of the University of Oklahoma,
7-time NCAA football champions, most recently in 2000! Back to
I-35, there are several exits to access Norman besides the OK 9
East exit, including Exit 108B (Lindsey St.), Exit 109 (Main
St.), Exit 110 (Robinson St.), Exit 112 (Tecumseh Rd.) and for
southbound travelers only, Exit 113 (U.S. 77). U.S. 77 is also
where the highway becomes 6 lanes (3 in each direction).
Actually, for southbound travelers, the 3-lane alignment was
recently extended down to Tecumseh Rd. but for northbound
travelers it begins with the merge of U.S. 77. The speed limit
goes back up from 60 to 70 at the Tecumseh Rd. exit. A sign replacement project
during the summer of 2004 replaced almost all signs between OK 9 and S.E. 19th
St. in Moore.
Interstate 35 and U.S. 77
continue northbound heading towards the Oklahoma City suburb of
Moore (pop. 41,138), where two strong tornadoes have hit the city in the last
five years: An F5 tornado on May 3, 1999 in which the strongest tornado winds
ever recorded happened (318 mph in northwest Moore), and an F4 tornado May 8,
2003, which hit just blocks south of the one four years and five days earlier.
(The second one also hit where I used to work at while I was there; had to get a new car because
of it!) Exit 114 (Indian Hills Rd.) accesses the
southern part of Moore and northern part of Norman. Exit 116 for
S. 19th St. has one of the largest Wal-Marts in the country there.
The speed limit also falls here from 70 to 65. Exit 117 (OK 37/S.
4th St./Main St./N. 5th St.), Exit 118 (N. 12th St.), Exit 119A (Shields Blvd./Old U.S. 77), and
Exit 119B (N. 27th St.) all access Moore.
Between Exit 119B and
Exit 120 (S.E. 89th St./S.E. 82nd St.) you officially enter the Oklahoma City (pop.
506,132) city limits and the speed limit goes down to 60. This
stretch of Interstate 35 was widened to six lanes in 2001. Between Exit 120 and
Exit 122B (S.E. 59th St.), construction wrapped up May 27, 2004. This widened the highway to
eight lanes between S.E. 89th St. and Interstate 240, and six lanes from
Interstate 240 to S.E. 59th St. The stretch also includes the dangerous
cloverleaf interchange with Interstate 240, which will be reconstructed
from late 2004/early 2005 through 2008 or 2009. For more information about the

After Exit 122A for S.E.
66th St., Interstate 35 has exits for S.E. 59th
St. (Exit 122B), S.E. 51st St. (Exit 123A), S.E. 44th St. (Exit
123B), Grand Blvd. (Exit 124A), S.E. 29th St./S.E. 25th St. (Exit
124B), and S.E. 15th St. (Exit 125B NB; Exit 125D SB), leading up to Interstate 40
and Interstate 235. Interstate 35 exits off the main freeway, and one of
the most tricky spots in Oklahoma City is seeing all the Interstate 35
northbound traffic merging into one lane to merge onto Interstate 40 East.
U.S. 77 continues straight as the mainline freeway becomes
Interstate 235. We'll see U.S. 77 once again in about 15 miles.
Interstate 35 and Interstate 40 are
multiplexed for about a mile, and have one exit - Exit 127 (Eastern
Ave./M.L. King Ave.) before splitting again. After almost 10
years of reconstruction, the eastern I-35/I-40 interchange has
been completely rebuilt and is a very smooth interchange now. I'm
just glad they finally got it done!
Interstate 35 is six lanes wide
between Interstate 40 and U.S. 62 East (Exit 130). After that, the highway
narrows to four lanes
to Exit 133 (Interstate 44 West). During the four-lane stretch, there are exits
for N.E. 36th St. (Exit 131), N.E. 50th St. (Exit 132A), and N.E.
63rd St. (Exit 132B).
Interstate 35's left lane at
Interstate 44 West (Exit 133) becomes an exit only lane, so another lane is
added just past the N.E. 63rd exit. But a mile later, that lane (which is the
right lane at this point) becomes an exit only lane to Wilshire Blvd. (Exit
134), with no warning until just before the exit. Two lanes merge from
Interstate 44 from the left as Interstate 35 and Interstate 44 become a 6 lane
freeway. After Wilshire, the speed limit increases from 60 to 70, and there are
exits for Britton Rd. (Exit 135), Hefner Rd. (Exit 136), and N.E. 122nd St.
(Exit 137), home of Oklahoma City's amusement park, Frontier City. A Tourist
Information Center is also located at N.E. 122nd St., along with several truck
stops, which causes traffic to back up sometimes. Also just south of the N.E.
122nd St. overpass is one of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol's favorite places to
hang out.
Just past N.E. 122nd
St. is a large multidirectional stack interchange with I-44 East
(the Turner Turnpike), and the Kilpatrick Turnpike. Entering Edmond (pop. 68,315) there are
exits for Memorial Rd. (Exit 138D), S.E. 33rd St. (Exit 139), S.E.
15th St. (Exit 140), U.S. 77/OK 66 (Exit 141), Danforth Rd. (Exit
142), and Covell Rd. (Exit 143). The freeway becomes 4 lanes
after the U.S. 77/OK 66 exit. After one more exit for Waterloo Rd. (Exit 146),
Interstate 35 enters Logan County.
