Highway
Review:
U.S. 283 runs from Brady, TX to Lexington, NE. In Oklahoma, U.S.
283 has the distinction of being the farthest west north-south
U.S. highway in the state (not including the panhandle). It
enters the Sooner State 14 miles south of Altus and U.S. 62. Altus (pop. 21,447) is the largest town
on U.S. 283's route in Oklahoma. OK 6
joins U.S. 283 in Altus at U.S. 62 and the highways are co-signed
for about 20 miles. At some points, U.S. 283 is not signed, but
OK 6 is! U.S. 283 turns off the mainline highway east of Mangum.
The section of U.S. 283/OK 6 between here and Altus was recently
reconstructed and was also widened from 2 lanes to 4 lanes. U.S.
283 heads due west for a few miles until it reaches OK 34 in Mangum, then the two highways head due
north. Just north of Mangum OK 9
joins the two highways for a 4-mile stretch, then OK 9 heads east
on its own as it heads towards Chickasha, Norman, Tecumseh, and
Ft. Smith along its cross-state journey.
Nine miles north of
the junction with OK 9 East, U.S. 283 heads northwest at OK 34
takes over heading due north. Seventeen miles later, U.S. 283
intersects Interstate 40 at its Exit 20. U.S. 283 is now heading
through the town of Sayre, which is also the county seat of
Beckham County. After departing Sayre, U.S. 283 heads through
grasslands and sees another intersection with OK 6 seven miles
north of Sayre. OK 33 and OK 47 join U.S. 283 for a few miles
during its time inside the Black Kettle National Grassland. Towns
are rare along this 63-mile stretch of U.S. 283 between
Interstate 40 and U.S. 60/OK 51. At U.S. 60/OK 51 in Arnett, U.S.
283 heads west for seven miles before heading off on its own once
again. OK 15 joins U.S. 283 in Shattuck, and they are together
for 11.7 miles. Thirteen miles after OK 15 heads west on its own,
U.S. 283 intersects U.S. 270/412/OK 3. The highway then heads
through Laverne and heads west with U.S. 64 for four miles near
Rosston. U.S. 283 then splits with U.S. 64, and 12 miles later,
motorists enter the Sunflower State.

This intersection was OK 44's southern
terminus for a little while. However, I saw
a different story when I returned in May
2004. U.S. 283 split from OK 6 here, while
OK 44 began a few miles to the north. (Top

of OK 152. (Photo taken 11/26/02) |
