U.S. 77 (Broadway Extension)
(Broadway Extension)

U.S. 77 runs along freeways for most of its run in Oklahoma City. From the south, the highway is duplexed with Interstate 35 to Interstate 40. After Interstate 35 departs the mainline, U.S. 77 continues straight ahead, and becomes duplexed with Interstate 235. After Interstate 235 ends at Interstate 44, U.S. 77 again continues straight ahead as the Broadway Extension. The freeway comes to an end just north of Memorial Rd. in Edmond, and remains six lanes wide to downtown Edmond and 2nd St., where U.S. 77 turns to the east towards Interstate 35.

The Broadway Extension carries anywhere from four lanes near its southern and northern ends to eight lanes in several places between interchanges. The 4-lane section just north of Interstate 44 is scheduled to be widened in the next few years to line up with the rest of the freeway to Memorial Rd., which was reconstructed in sections from around 1999 to October 2002. The Broadway Extension carries a 60 mph speed limit, but expect to go about 75 mph to keep up with the flow of traffic.

U.S. 77 North at N. 63rd St. The Broadway
Extension marks the east-west dividing line in
this part of Oklahoma City, so almost all signs on
U.S. 77 do not specify N.E. or N.W. (Photo

U.S. 77 South approaching N.W. 63rd St. There is
no sign that Interstate 235 is ahead until one is
actually on the interstate. (Photo taken 4/11/03)
U.S. 77 South at N.W. 63rd St. The right lane is
an exit-only lane here, even though it is not
mentioned here. It is mentioned, however, on the
1/4 mile advance signage. (Photo taken 4/11/03)

An "Exit Only" tab was once affixed below the

has been left alone. (Photo taken 4/11/03)
U.S. 77 South at Britton Rd. Notice the double
exit signs. The one at ground level was there
during the construction. Now that the construction
has been done for 1 1/2 years, I think it could be
taken down by now! (Photo taken 4/11/03)

For a time, this sign gantry just south of the
Hefner Rd. exit on U.S. 77 South was the home to
a "Lane Ends Merge Right" sign, as the left lane
ended just ahead. Once the lane was extended
1 1/2 miles further south, the sign was taken down,
and the gantry remains in place, with no signs
on it whatsoever. I have an idea; ODOT could
put up a variable message sign here. The
Broadway Extension could use one of those!

U.S. 77 North at N.E. 122nd St. The freeway
curves a slight bit to the east, which makes it fall
into the eastern half of the city's street grid. (Photo

U.S. 77 South at Kilpatrick Turnpike. The off-ramp
only provides access to westbound. Motorists
are advised to use N.E. 122nd St. to get to
eastbound, and a new sign erected in late 2003
makes that suggestion, as the bottom picture
shows. (Top photo taken 4/11/03, bottom photo

marks the northern end of the freeway. The road
narrows to two lanes for a bit before widening
back to three lanes once the street descends to
street level. (Photo taken 4/11/03)
